Morning Star Mine
The Morning Star mine was one of Australia's most prodigious gold mines yielding 883,000 ounces of gold at an estimated grade of at least 26.5 grams per tonne. Scant records were kept of gold production between 1862 and the mid 1890s, so the production figure is estimated to be very conservative as is the grade of gold produced. The actual average grade was just shy of 25g/t Au. but tailings were deposited in Morning Star Creek and measured between 2g/t Au. and 7 g/t Au.
The Morning Star Dyke contains multiple auriferous quartz reefs, some of which produced high grade gold of over 40g/t Au. Around 10% of the gold produced at the Morning Star was contained in sediments rather than dyke, mostly at the dyke contact or nearby. The Morning Star Dyke supported a mine over 25 Levels of roughly 100 feet per level but the dyke is open both at depth and width.
